Next Man Up: 2029 Tristan Edwards

Introduction

2029 Tristan Edwards, a 6’8” wing from Wilson Academy (GA) by way of Canada, has made his presence felt early. I first noticed him during the Georgia Live period and he answered every question that I still had about him with his performance at the Elite 60 Showcase. He competes, allows the game to come to him and produces. You can tell he plays with purpose.

Here is what we said about Tristan based on his performance at Elite 60 Showcase:

Physical Tools and Athletic Ability

Edwards has grown close to seven inches in the past two years. Despite such rapid growth, he’s maintained fluid athleticism and a strong base. He runs the floor smooth, explodes off the ground and plays balanced even through excessive defensive contact.

What stands out most is how natural his movement looks. He covers ground easily and reacts fast. When he takes off, it is either to finish at the rim or change the play defensively. He has great rebounding instincts that he uses to control the glass. Also possesses a quick second jump.

Defensive Presence

Tristan has a competitive nature on the defensive side of the ball too. He moves his feet, switches to defend guards and contests everything around the rim! Even when he’s out of position, he recovers quickly and finds a way to disrupt the gameplay of the opposition by changing or blocking shots. He takes pride in defending. He communicates when needed and leads through effort. Coaches already trust him to set the tone on that end of the floor. His motor stays high and his energy has a real effect on his team.

Offensive Game

Edwards has developed offensively as a player who can score in several ways without needing a high usage rate. His handle is steady for a player of his size and it allows him to attack off the dribble against wings or push in transition. He gets downhill with control and finishes through contact. When defenders give space, he can hit from outside. His jumper looks smooth, both on the catch and when pulling up from midrange.

He doesn’t force shots or play out of his comfort zone. He moves well without the ball and can see over the defense to find cutters with pinpoint passes. Highly efficient game. His versatility makes him highly valuable in virtually any type of offense.

Work Ethic and Mindset

Edwards is reliable. He plays the same way every day, regardless of situation. Even in moments when he was not feeling one hundred percent, his effort stayed the same. That level of focus is rare for his age. He shows leadership through his habits. He helps on defense, crashes the glass, and gives energy plays that others feed off. His approach fits team basketball. He does the work that wins games and never looks for shortcuts.

Projection

Long-term, Edwards projects as a high-major Division I prospect following in the mold of several recent Georgia based wings before him (Ace Bailey, Karter Knox, Bryson Tiller and more). His frame, motor, and versatility already stand out. As his handle tightens and he gains more reps, his overall impact will expand both on and off of the stat sheet.

He is earning everything that will be coming his way as the season progresses.

Next man up.
